Lawns are usually composed only of grass species, subject to weed and pest control, maintained in a green color (e.g., by watering), and are regularly mowed to ensure an acceptable length. Lawns are used around houses, apartments, commercial buildings and offices. Many city parks also have large lawn areas. In recreational contexts, the specialised names turf, pitch, field or green may be used, depending on the sport and the continent.</p><p>The term "lawn", referring to a managed grass space, dates to at least than the 16th century. Tied to suburban expansion and the creation of the household aesthetic, the lawn is an important aspect of the interaction between the natural environment and the constructed urban and suburban space. In many suburban areas, there are bylaws in place requiring houses to have lawns and requiring the proper maintenance of these lawns. In some jurisdictions where there are water shortages, local government authorities are encouraging alternatives to lawns to reduce water use.</p><p>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawn" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">707-678-8200</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-47911166719739404182024-03-13T07:53:00.000-07:002024-03-13T07:53:00.150-07:0010 Small Shrubs that Will Fit In Any Garden! 🌿 // Garden Answer<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/xDG61iIId_Y?si=YAMVqQBuxIKCGSZc" width="480"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">707-678-8200</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-5507408403490196092024-03-10T10:18:00.000-07:002024-03-10T10:18:00.124-07:00Pests in the Garden<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6dXiFYpQc8LpY50A5Xa_nGFdoC9dRbkbvzXwWVeHengI2XCMC2g-BlNT9nRQoHUXYbxoe_A4R2pMUNTSzAZdL1O3ZnDm31M4O_x9QidVP9Fd06KVLP9HgT__x1r4iMiXZFD9PFprwJgFl1aGmR_okPs6_oupE9CrUgS7UrDr3qWG40rYXtOo2acjj/s800/AdobeStock_193194827%20(1).jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="800" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6dXiFYpQc8LpY50A5Xa_nGFdoC9dRbkbvzXwWVeHengI2XCMC2g-BlNT9nRQoHUXYbxoe_A4R2pMUNTSzAZdL1O3ZnDm31M4O_x9QidVP9Fd06KVLP9HgT__x1r4iMiXZFD9PFprwJgFl1aGmR_okPs6_oupE9CrUgS7UrDr3qWG40rYXtOo2acjj/s320/AdobeStock_193194827%20(1).jpeg" width="320" /></a></div></div><div><b>Garden pests</b></div><div>Garden pests are generally plants, fungi, or animals (frequently insects) that engage in activity that the gardener considers undesirable. A pest may crowd out desirable plants, disturb soil, stunt the growth of young seedlings, steal or damage fruit, or otherwise kill plants, hamper their growth, damage their appearance, or reduce the quality of the edible or ornamental portions of the plant. Aphids, spider mites, slugs, snails, ants, birds, and even cats are commonly considered to be garden pests.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>Because gardeners may have different goals, organisms considered "garden pests" vary from gardener to gardener. Tropaeolum speciosum, for example, may be considered a desirable and ornamental garden plant, or it may be considered a pest if it seeds and starts to grow where it is not wanted. As another example, in lawns, moss can become dominant and be impossible to eradicate. In some lawns, lichens, especially very damp lawn lichens such as Peltigera lactucfolia and P. membranacea, can become difficult to control and are considered pests.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Garden pest control</b></div><div>There are many ways by which unwanted pests are removed from a garden. The techniques vary depending on the pest, the gardener's goals, and the gardener's philosophy. For example, snails may be dealt with through the use of a chemical pesticide, an organic pesticide, hand-picking, barriers, or simply growing snail-resistant plants.</div><div><br /></div><div>Pest control is often done through the use of pesticides, which may be either organic or artificially synthesized. Pesticides may affect the ecology of a garden due to their effects on the populations of both target and non-target species. For example, unintended exposure to some neonicotinoid pesticides has been proposed as a factor in the recent decline in honey bee populations. A mole vibrator can deter mole activity in a garden.</div><div><br /></div><div>Other means of control include the removal of infected plants, using fertilizers and biostimulants to improve the health and vigour of plants so they better resist attack, practising crop rotation to prevent pest build-up, using companion planting, and practising good garden hygiene, such as disinfecting tools and clearing debris and weeds which may harbour pests.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><div>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardening" target="_blank">here</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">707-678-8200</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div></div></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-44910411405707440362024-03-07T13:17:00.000-08:002024-03-07T13:17:00.129-08:00Gardening vs Farming<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9VEOU2dM2ukeyzywOwZo0KpbxWQCNAYmbAE_KLlzbWzvODLauF9MNubT89WKWWJayASWigXobfAUMXLuzJoBFh0pO_dM3hAG_TNFLtTTs0Ia7eJydeKHkQHPDcrcoXWwBGtFbXtHOYJp3WnQv2D5vk-ZiEKWRt7n5HUE9zfzaJ1cLpXJyRSZBKpNH/s1688/Fotolia_103106389_Subscription_Monthly_M.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1125" data-original-width="1688" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9VEOU2dM2ukeyzywOwZo0KpbxWQCNAYmbAE_KLlzbWzvODLauF9MNubT89WKWWJayASWigXobfAUMXLuzJoBFh0pO_dM3hAG_TNFLtTTs0Ia7eJydeKHkQHPDcrcoXWwBGtFbXtHOYJp3WnQv2D5vk-ZiEKWRt7n5HUE9zfzaJ1cLpXJyRSZBKpNH/s320/Fotolia_103106389_Subscription_Monthly_M.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Gardening for beauty is likely nearly as old as farming for food, however for most of history for the majority of people there was no real distinction since the need for food and other useful products trumped other concerns. Small-scale, subsistence agriculture (called hoe-farming) is largely indistinguishable from gardening. A patch of potatoes grown by a Peruvian peasant or an Irish smallholder for personal use could be described as either a garden or a farm. Gardening for average people evolved as a separate discipline, more concerned with aesthetics, recreation and leisure, under the influence of the pleasure gardens of the wealthy.[citation needed] Meanwhile, farming has evolved (in developed countries) in the direction of commercialization, economics of scale, and monocropping.</div><div><br /></div><div>In respect to its food-producing purpose, gardening is distinguished from farming chiefly by scale and intent. Farming occurs on a larger scale, and with the production of salable goods as a major motivation. Gardening happens on a smaller scale, primarily for pleasure and to produce goods for the gardener's own family or community. There is some overlap between the terms, particularly in that some moderate-sized vegetable growing concerns, often called market gardening, can fit in either category.</div><div><br /></div><div>The key distinction between gardening and farming is essentially one of scale; gardening can be a hobby or an income supplement, but farming is generally understood as a full-time or commercial activity, usually involving more land and quite different practices. One distinction is that gardening is labor-intensive and employs very little infrastructural capital, sometimes no more than a few tools, e.g. a spade, hoe, basket and watering can. By contrast, larger-scale farming often involves irrigation systems, chemical fertilizers and harvesters or at least ladders, e.g. to reach up into fruit trees. However, this distinction is becoming blurred with the increasing use of power tools in even small gardens.</div><div><br /></div><div>Monty Don has speculated on an atavistic connection between present-day gardeners and pre-modern peasantry.</div><div><br /></div><div>The term precision agriculture is sometimes used to describe gardening using intermediate technology (more than tools, less than harvesters), especially of organic varieties. Gardening is effectively scaled up to feed entire villages of over 100 people from specialized plots. A variant is the community garden which offers plots to urban dwellers; see further in allotment (gardening).</div><div><br /></div><div>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardening" target="_blank">here</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">707-678-8200</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-17677123951076731172024-03-04T07:52:00.001-08:002024-03-04T07:52:58.475-08:00Understanding Our Soil: The Nitrogen Cycle, Fixers, and Fertilizer<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/A8qTRBc8Bws?si=3eAiEqQrRii0h8Pt" width="480"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">What are nitrogen fixing plants, and why use them over nitrogen fertilizer? Although a garden typically is located on the land near a residence, it may also be located on a roof, in an atrium, on a balcony, in a window box, on a patio or vivarium.</p><p>Gardening also takes place in non-residential green areas, such as parks, public or semi-public gardens (botanical gardens or zoological gardens), amusement parks, along transportation corridors, and around tourist attractions and garden hotels. In these situations, a staff of gardeners or groundskeepers maintains the gardens.</p><p></p><ul><li>Indoor gardening is concerned with the growing of houseplants within a residence or building, in a conservatory, or in a greenhouse. Indoor gardens are sometimes incorporated as part of air conditioning or heating systems. Indoor gardening extends the growing season in the fall and spring and can be used for winter gardening.</li><li>Native plant gardening is concerned with the use of native plants with or without the intent of creating wildlife habitat. The goal is to create a garden in harmony with, and adapted to a given area. This type of gardening typically reduces water usage, maintenance, and fertilization costs, while increasing native faunal interest.</li><li>Water gardening is concerned with growing plants adapted to pools and ponds. Bog gardens are also considered a type of water garden. These all require special conditions and considerations. A simple water garden may consist solely of a tub containing the water and plant(s). In aquascaping, a garden is created within an aquarium tank.</li><li>Container gardening is concerned with growing plants in any type of container either indoors or outdoors. Common containers are pots, hanging baskets, and planters. Container gardening is usually used in atriums and on balconies, patios, and roof tops.</li><li>Hügelkultur is concerned with growing plants on piles of rotting wood, as a form of raised bed gardening and composting in situ. An English loanword from German, it means "mound garden." Toby Hemenway, noted permaculture author and teacher, considers wood buried in trenches to also be a form of hugelkultur referred to as a dead wood swale. Hugelkultur is practiced by Sepp Holzer as a method of forest gardening and agroforestry, and by Geoff Lawton as a method of dryland farming and desert greening. When used as a method of disposing of large volumes of waste wood and woody debris, hugelkultur accomplishes carbon sequestration. It is also a form of xeriscaping.</li><li>Community gardening is a social activity in which an area of land is gardened by a group of people, providing access to fresh produce, herbs, flowers and plants as well as access to satisfying labor, neighborhood improvement, sense of community and connection to the environment. Community gardens are typically owned in trust by local governments or nonprofits.</li><li>Garden sharing partners landowners with gardeners in need of land. These shared gardens, typically front or back yards, are usually used to produce food that is divided between the two parties.</li><li>Organic gardening uses natural, sustainable methods, fertilizers and pesticides to grow non-genetically modified crops.</li><li>Biodynamic gardening or biodynamic agriculture is similar to organic gardening, but it includes various esoteric concepts drawn from the ideas of Rudolf Steiner, such as astrological sowing and planting calendar and particular field and compost preparations.</li><li>Commercial gardening is a more intensive type of gardening that involves the production of vegetables, nontropical fruits, and flowers from local farmers. Commercial gardening began because farmers would sell locally to stop food from spoiling faster because of the transportation of goods from a far distance. Mediterranean agriculture is also a common practice that commercial gardeners use. Mediterranean agriculture is the practice of cultivating animals such as sheep to help weed and provide manure for vine crops, grains, or citrus. Gardeners can easily train these animals to not eat the actual plant.</li></ul><div><div>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardening" target="_blank">here</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">707-678-8200</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div></div></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-16858082068721214352024-02-24T09:25:00.000-08:002024-02-24T09:25:00.126-08:00Desert landscaping<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/Q9OSDiNrUOQ?si=MF7IVEL0YhC5h7Ue" width="480"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">707-678-8200</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-38854785158980290552024-02-21T13:38:00.000-08:002024-02-21T13:38:00.131-08:00Types of Lawn Plants<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiIgRBkjDop0-EvW3LGjxjqoMp3aC1ODmKGJ49pkRrKaY4Dee3V3Wm7bF6L-3q7ItBbyeXd136n7B21Bm9DhmjFR_Mv1NfwSpKUdVTWeM-ACvwkxPUxGbD4-LTzu8CmbcFifuylHeJyIByeKSoggUO9MofeNmtsrah00XlZgB5soYuB6TJDt7HfO6Z/s1661/Fotolia_4970668_Subscription_Monthly_M.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1144" data-original-width="1661" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiIgRBkjDop0-EvW3LGjxjqoMp3aC1ODmKGJ49pkRrKaY4Dee3V3Wm7bF6L-3q7ItBbyeXd136n7B21Bm9DhmjFR_Mv1NfwSpKUdVTWeM-ACvwkxPUxGbD4-LTzu8CmbcFifuylHeJyIByeKSoggUO9MofeNmtsrah00XlZgB5soYuB6TJDt7HfO6Z/s320/Fotolia_4970668_Subscription_Monthly_M.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Lawns need not be, and have not always been, made up of grasses alone. In some jurisdictions where there are water shortages, local government authorities are encouraging alternatives to lawns to reduce water use.</p><p>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawn" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">707-678-8200</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-60563760745646512532024-02-09T10:37:00.000-08:002024-02-09T10:37:00.136-08:00What is Flagstone?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhjYGmCspjPQmD5FO7Qk4793X23iu54VIcTXqISKgsqPMUOSM8j-G_NauRLgU-Nb5vK4XVwPNWHhCgSyDkChOVh3_FGqYLhdCi7pmAyshzaXCqLaKjMo7Vic3fpmYpfaiwi1tNT-2ZGi0hzWJf0uRFkppGHaSk-JECbEMVk085YOOtpPWopxxmkYQ6w=s800" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="521" data-original-width="800" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhjYGmCspjPQmD5FO7Qk4793X23iu54VIcTXqISKgsqPMUOSM8j-G_NauRLgU-Nb5vK4XVwPNWHhCgSyDkChOVh3_FGqYLhdCi7pmAyshzaXCqLaKjMo7Vic3fpmYpfaiwi1tNT-2ZGi0hzWJf0uRFkppGHaSk-JECbEMVk085YOOtpPWopxxmkYQ6w=w368-h239" width="368" /></a></div><p>Flagstone (flag) is a generic flat stone, sometimes cut in regular rectangular or square shape and usually used for paving slabs or walkways, patios, flooring, fences and roofing. It may be used for memorials, headstones, facades and other construction. The name derives from Middle English flagge meaning turf, perhaps from Old Norse flaga meaning slab or chip.</p><p>Flagstone is a sedimentary rock that is split into layers along bedding planes. Flagstone is usually a form of a sandstone composed of feldspar and quartz and is arenaceous in grain size (0.16 mm – 2 mm in diameter). The material that binds flagstone is usually composed of silica, calcite, or iron oxide. The rock color usually comes from these cementing materials. Typical flagstone colors are red, blue, and buff, though exotic colors exist.</p><p>Flagstone is quarried in places with bedded sedimentary rocks with fissile bedding planes.</p><p>Around the thirteenth century, the ceilings, walls and floors in European architecture became more ornate. Anglo-Saxons in particular used flagstones as flooring materials in the interior rooms of castles and other structures. Lindisfarne Castle in England and Muchalls Castle (14th century) in Scotland are among many examples of buildings with surviving flagstone floors.</p><p>Flagstone shingles are a traditional roofing material, and are a type of roof shingle commonly used in the Alps, where they are laid dry – often held in place with pegs or hooks. In the Aosta Valley, Italy, buildings in historical areas are required to be covered in stone shingles.</p><p>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagstone" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><p></p><div style="text-align: center;">707-678-8200</div><div style="text-align: center;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div style="text-align: center;">150 East H Street</div><div style="text-align: center;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-74576098515581968882024-02-06T09:20:00.000-08:002024-02-06T09:20:00.136-08:00Garden of the Week Coachella Valley<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/M8wrZnNR4OM?si=_WkvoahDZ5xbP8a8" width="480"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div>Garden of the Week travels to the Coachella Valley. This corner lot was discovered while on a photo shoot for the Coachella Valley Water District project. It resides in the town of Palm Desert, not far from Palm Springs. In desert landscape design dramatic color and bold textures reign supreme. The brilliant reds of the bougainvillea and the rich tones of the purple lantana provide accents to the overwhelming blue sky. The Yucca rostrate and the Agave Americana provide the contrasting textures while the Mesquite trees tie it all together. We loved the weaving walkway on the side of the property and the dramatic trellis.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">707-678-8200</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div></div></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-44015560823261167602024-02-03T10:36:00.000-08:002024-02-03T10:36:00.133-08:00Bark<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiu4Ysze1hC2AyUq8h_KjziYk8_FKo1Y7t1wD4MeMRGg6glxR6yWIMVyH2SxGf4nkMEzrxtkFWD3rTHyg_IGsS7Hh63qMy5YjID6ameQk4KnsLady05ifhVaUfTKhyloobZ-OEzo7KM67uB875Evh6-3dsNFIof2x9CVvmQTZYRP5b7LeHe1-aa-fW4=s600" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiu4Ysze1hC2AyUq8h_KjziYk8_FKo1Y7t1wD4MeMRGg6glxR6yWIMVyH2SxGf4nkMEzrxtkFWD3rTHyg_IGsS7Hh63qMy5YjID6ameQk4KnsLady05ifhVaUfTKhyloobZ-OEzo7KM67uB875Evh6-3dsNFIof2x9CVvmQTZYRP5b7LeHe1-aa-fW4=s320" width="320" /></a></div><p>Bark is the outermost layers of stems and roots of woody plants. Plants with bark include trees, woody vines, and shrubs. Bark refers to all the tissues outside the vascular cambium and is a nontechnical term. It overlays the wood and consists of the inner bark and the outer bark. The inner bark, which in older stems is living tissue, includes the innermost layer of the periderm. The outer bark on older stems includes the dead tissue on the surface of the stems, along with parts of the outermost periderm and all the tissues on the outer side of the periderm. The outer bark on trees which lies external to the living periderm is also called the rhytidome.</p><p>Products derived from bark include bark shingle siding and wall coverings, spices and other flavorings, tanbark for tannin, resin, latex, medicines, poisons, various hallucinogenic chemicals and cork. Bark has been used to make cloth, canoes, and ropes and used as a surface for paintings and map making.[2] A number of plants are also grown for their attractive or interesting bark colorations and surface textures or their bark is used as landscape mulch.</p><p>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bark_(botany)" target="_blank">here</a>.<br /><br /></p><div style="text-align: center;">707-678-8200</div><div style="text-align: center;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div style="text-align: center;">150 East H Street</div><div style="text-align: center;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-17898680551681788672024-01-31T06:49:00.000-08:002024-01-31T06:49:00.244-08:00Materials and Production of Wood Chips<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiIA_s0Kd-BOpuKNTWwSNQDFjQ6CzdrT8mdzJYrMdDJXejPsE0v3wF8SBOyZZ5C4P4RCmQ74nR9T_Jwc_xouVjATuOHPLeLwZlpErSR__iEMybdjDzVOZY71k-feXvMkOCBRxaDwr0yqTj1Hu2qdmxkbv4s_GCldvOL_VSOhs20KwDJuk0Nzal4hXBX=s1070" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1070" data-original-width="640" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiIA_s0Kd-BOpuKNTWwSNQDFjQ6CzdrT8mdzJYrMdDJXejPsE0v3wF8SBOyZZ5C4P4RCmQ74nR9T_Jwc_xouVjATuOHPLeLwZlpErSR__iEMybdjDzVOZY71k-feXvMkOCBRxaDwr0yqTj1Hu2qdmxkbv4s_GCldvOL_VSOhs20KwDJuk0Nzal4hXBX=s320" width="191" /></a></div><p>The raw materials of woodchips can be pulpwood, waste wood, and residual wood from agriculture, landscaping, logging, and sawmills. Woodchips can also be produced from remaining forestry materials including tree crowns, branches, unsaleable materials or undersized trees.</p><p>Forestry operations provide the raw materials needed for woodchip production. Almost any tree can be converted into woodchips, however, the type and quality of the wood used to produce woodchips depends largely on the market. Softwood species, for instance, tend to be more versatile for use as woodchips than hardwood species because they are less dense and faster growing.</p><p>A wood chipper is a machine used for cutting wood into smaller pieces (chips). There are several types of wood chippers, each having a different use depending on the type of processing the woodchips will undergo.</p><p>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodchips" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Come visit us for all your landscaping material needs. Reasons for applying mulch include conservation of soil moisture, improving fertility and health of the soil, reducing weed growth and enhancing the visual appeal of the area.</p><p>A mulch is usually, but not exclusively, organic in nature. It may be permanent (e.g. plastic sheeting) or temporary (e.g. bark chips). It may be applied to bare soil or around existing plants. Mulches of manure or compost will be incorporated naturally into the soil by the activity of worms and other organisms. The process is used both in commercial crop production and in gardening, and when applied correctly, can improve soil productivity.</p><p>Read more, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulch" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Come visit us for all your mulch and landscape material needs!</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">707-678-8200</div><div style="text-align: center;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div style="text-align: center;">150 East H Street</div><div style="text-align: center;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-37043701663356334772024-01-22T06:44:00.000-08:002024-01-22T06:44:00.129-08:00Do-It-Yourself Concrete From Dixon Landscape Materials<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbz9EW02pb6JLwko9GLm2_cQhiHgBBOnZ0H4gHCfGkTvpcSjcHOXSGBfIfVQEvR0AOpSTWD8DfAtQMXfOsqQlXj5hmS2Z1jjhi7oMzOrZJUfDc80sZHLyyg--gyX3j3xuWU0aI4rk2KiMyspOT_YcVDjfofieKBYhXFFrYze-3Bc06GqyJutk_JjEQ=s591" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="218" data-original-width="591" height="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbz9EW02pb6JLwko9GLm2_cQhiHgBBOnZ0H4gHCfGkTvpcSjcHOXSGBfIfVQEvR0AOpSTWD8DfAtQMXfOsqQlXj5hmS2Z1jjhi7oMzOrZJUfDc80sZHLyyg--gyX3j3xuWU0aI4rk2KiMyspOT_YcVDjfofieKBYhXFFrYze-3Bc06GqyJutk_JjEQ=w468-h207" width="468" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>Dixon Landscape now offers a Do It Yourself (DIY) solution for your concrete needs. We have a fleet of small “portable cement mixers" that tow behind a vehicle and hold 1-yard of concrete, which continues to mix during transit so that it is an effective pour when it arrives at the destination.</p><p>It is a very inexpensive way to do a smaller job compared to buying concrete in a bigger truck. It is also more convenient and useful than mixing it yourself onsite – and a good deal less work as well.</p><p>We load all the ingredients onsite (concrete gravel, cement and water) into the “mixer trailer" while it is spinning here at Dixon Landscape…the mixer trailer is then ready to haul away to the job destination.</p><p>See more at <a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/diy-concrete/">https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/diy-concrete/</a></p><div style="text-align: center;"><p><span>707-678-8200</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon Landscape Materials</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">150 East H Street</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Dixon CA 95620</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://dixonlandscapematerials.com/" target="_blank">Website</a></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Dixonlandscapehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02011517444068086742noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869197036028246612.post-60907919472186264722024-01-19T16:01:00.000-08:002024-01-19T16:01:12.393-08:0010 BEST All Season Small Trees For Front Yard | Low Maintenance Dwarf Tr...<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/Nr-wasEeIe4?si=usv3WGwmrWn4ki-s" width="480"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div>Small to mid-sized ornamental trees offer year-round interest to the home garden , providing visual appeal in every season.
